Digital Culture
Nov 17, 2020

With the digitalizing world and developing technology, people have become part of a participatory culture. This has caused the remix culture that has existed since the past to increase by changing its form.

The birth of the internet has led to major changes in productivity and the way we communicate. Now, the Internet encourage a remix culture from which people are participating in the creation of remixes for creative growth. With the ability to share digitally, a new remix culture emerged where amateurs, not only professionals.

Remix has sparked various controversies about the ownership of the works. Does the remix constitute a copyright infringement? Can creativity be restricted by copyright?

In my opinion the remix is not an act of stealing. Rather, the remix is part of a creative process. For make remix, copy, transform and combine actions are required. Each of these actions requires effort and imagination. Remix taught us that society can move away from professional work and only support the work of people who are trying to make their dreams come true.

My opinion on copyright is as follows:

Even if the community already knows who the work is, the remixer should get permission from the original owner of the work. This should be done not only as an obligation, but as a respect for that person.
